Didsbury broke Wallasey's hold on the Cheshire Knockout Trophy today when they overtook Wallasey's total of 153-8 to win comfortably by 8 wickets thanks to an unbroken third wicket stand of 111 between Mark Slater (74*) and Jonathan Lee (38*). scorecard. The Cheshire County League championship leaders were on top from almost the first ball after losing the toss and being asked to field. Winners for the last three seaasons, Wallasey’s experienced cup battlers were tied down by accurate bowling and athletic fielding and were only 69-2 at the halfway stage. Pace bowler Haran Dhamaraja then took out three Wallasey mid-order batsmen in quick succession in a slump from 105-4 to 107-7 and it was left to Dave Conlan (36 not out) to shepherd the tail to a modest final tally of 153-8. Dhamaraja finished with 3-21 while Asif Majid and Stuart Stoneman both claimed two wickets cheaply. After losing Stoneman for four and Paul Slattery for 20 at 43-2, Didsbury’s third wicket pair were defiant against much appealing which sometimes went over the top. Slater went on to attack superbly to become the senior partner in an unbroken stand of 112, finishing with 74 not out, which was to win him the Man of the Match award. Skipper Jonathan Lee had the satisfaction of playing a key supporting role (38 not out) then of receiving the Quinn Thomas trophy from co-sponsor Maurice Quinn together with a handsome cheque for club funds. Lee paid tribute to a fine team effort and said his players had performed with great consistency in cup and league throughout the season. In a sporting speech Wallasey skipper Mike Beaver admitted that after three years when they had rolled all opposition before them, his team had been better by opposition who had outplayed them in every aspect of the game.
